coming into san francisco. there are other loopholes as well. >>> today, north bay congressman mike thompson will head up a hearing on gun violence prevention. he's a hunter and gun owner and believes the second amendment should be protected. but he says there's room for changes in gun policies to reduce gun violence. he says that requires background checks for all purchases. he supports strictly penalties for people who buy them illegally for them who can't get them as well as -- as well as all gun trafficking. >>> coming up at 7:45, we'll tell you both sides of the debate. >>> there's now word the rape allegations against michael crabtree are not holding up. today's chronicle reports his accuser was one of three women who joined crabtree for a party at the w hotel on third street. she claims crabtree assaulted her after the party held after the 9ers beat the packers but the sources say the other two women told investigators that crabtree did not assault anyone. police have not found any physical evidence of an attack. the sacramento kings may have some new bidders. the bee reports

at dodger stadium in 2011. >>> famous big wave surfer mike parsons is recovering from a broken neck he got while surfing. the bulletin reports he nearly drowned after slamming his head into the water while trying to catch a wave last weekend. he was wearing a flotaation device that saved his life. he is expected to make a full recover yes. >> the sharks are back on the ice in san jose and fans just couldn't be happier. fans cheered as the doors opened at hp last night and even bear hugged the team's mascot. a lock out kept them away for months. >> i waited like months for san jose to come back and play the home game. i'm so excited to watch. >> employees are also excited. their work hours were cut during the lock out. the sharks scored four goals in the third period to beat the coyotes. >>> people who work at restaurants in san francisco could get another payday. more than 50 restaurant owners are being targeted for charging extra fees to cover the city mandated health care coverage. the city claims only a third of that money actually went to medical costs. today san francisco city at

today and a vote planned for tomorrow. >> reporter: mike thompson is part of a house committee holding a meeting today on the debt ceiling. they are taking a look at how the past has voted to raise the limit. the committee is examining the constitution to see if it provides options for the president when the deal is reached. tomorrow, the house will vote on increasing the debt ceiling so the u.s. can pay its bills through may. if congress approves, pressure falls on senate democrats to pass their first budget in four years. without one there could be a partial government shut down at the end of march. congressman mike honda is making a pitch. i will explain his proposal when i see you next. back to you. >> thank you. >>> great economic news just coming in right now. u.s. home sales rose to a five- year high last year. that should bode well for the markets. dow jones is down a little bit. right now, the nasdaq also down, but the s&p s&p, posting a little bit of a -- but the s&p posting a little bit of a gain. >>> >>> a young girl is dead, several others injured after a strong earthquake

it is sunday, january 27th i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. walked out of the house to grab the paper today, felt the wind and cold. let's check if with rosemary. >> good morning, to you. pretty start to the day. 15 minutes until the official sunrise. mike mentioned, it is cold and brisk. for the afternoon mostly sunny skies. temperatures will be cooler than what we felt on saturday. i will line up your numbers and show you what i see coming up. >>> we begin with a developing story of a tragedy in south america. at least 245 people are now dead in a nightclub fire in southern brazil. we want to show you the first pictures of the aftermath that are coming into our newsroom. the fire broke out at the kiss nightclub during a concert. that club reached maximum capacity with up to 2,000 party goers inside. the casualty toll is expected to climb. at least 200 pay tree quantities were hurt. a nearby gym has been turned into a makeshift morgue. investigators say it's too early still to figure out the cause of the fire. stay tuned throughout county -- stay tuned to ktvu throughout the morning
